A note about online study
Dear God, I worship and praise your Name, for you are holy and majestic! I just want to say that I trust you with my life. I ask that you would help me to complete all that you have called me to do. Do not let me become distracted from the things that are most important. Forgive me for the times that I have taken my eyes off of you. I want to finish all that you have called me to do and hold tightly to your promises. I thank you for your forgiveness and love. Help me this day to honor your. In Jesus' name. . . Amen.
Hebrews 10:23
"Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we say we have, for God can be trusted to keep his promise."
Hebrews 12:2
"We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish."
How do we keep our eyes on Jesus from start to finish?
How does our faith depend upon Jesus?
Why did the author of Hebrews say "eyes fixed on Jesus" as opposed to our "hearts" or our "ears"? Any thoughts?
How do we fix our eyes on someone we cannot see?
Do fixed eyes upon Jesus keep us from wavering? How?
Is it harder to keep your eyes of Jesus when things seem easy or more difficult? Why?
Do you know people that started strong in the Lord, but are now spiritually weak? What happened?
What is the biggest distraction from keeping your eyes on Jesus?
Has God given you any promises? Do you know any in the Bible?
Look up in the Bible one promise today, and ask the Lord to build into your life the truth and hope of that promise.
When a house is almost completed, the final things that are left include: laying tile, choosing carpet, putting up light fixtures, painting, or putting in cabinets. These are all tasks which could be called "finishing details." God also does "finishing details" in our lives. As we have been studying this week, God is at work in our lives to build into what he has designed us to be. There are some areas of our lives which appear to be much more "completed" than others. For example, some of us do pretty well when facing certain temptations but when it comes to some others -- we struggle. There are some things that we have done pretty well in by God's grace, but occasionally we fall into trouble. Those are the things where God wants to work the finishing details of his holiness. These are the areas where we might be good at already by God's strength, but we are still not completely perfect in.
God wants our lives to be a picture of "purity." No matter what age we are, there is still work to be done. The reason we are on this earth is because God is not yet finished with everything in our lives. There are still finishing details. Hebrews 12:2 states that God is both the "starter and finisher" of our faith. In other words, God will finish his work within us. Sometimes it seems that God will never finish us -- especially when we see all the areas we fall short in every day -- but nevertheless, God's plan for us will be completed. It is exciting when you are almost done with a project. I wonder if it excites God when he is almost done with areas of our lives. Of course, God will always be at work until we go to be with him in heaven -- but it pleases him to see the areas of our lives that are well developed by his power. Let us live today with the full assurance that God will do all the finishing details in us.
