“Study to show yourself approved by God …”  2 Timothy 2:15a KJV

Prayer Focus for Today

Pray for all the children and young people who participated in Sunday’s worship service, and offer a prayer of thanksgiving for their willingness to use their gifts and talents in Jesus’ service!

Pray for Shelly Rinaman, children’s nurture facilitator at New Life.  Pray that God continues to guide her as she provides leadership for this ministry area.

God’s Word Today

Since Sunday was a children and youth Sunday at New Life, we will be taking a break from a specific teaching Scripture.  We are going to look at our hearts (Valentine’s Day is on February 14th in the U.S.A.) this week.

Proverbs 4:23

Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.

(Note:  The Hebrew translation is “for from it flows the springs of life.”)

From Today’s Reading, a Believer …

The Bible tells us that our hearts are the source of all actions in life.  “The heart is used in Scripture as the most comprehensive term for the authentic person.  It is the part of our being where we desire, deliberate and decide.  It has been described as the place of conscious and decisive spiritual activity, the comprehensive term for a person as a whole; his feelings, desires, passions, thought, understanding and will … the center of a person … the place to which God turns.”  (“Fan the Flame,” by Joe Stowell).

Describe the heart of a believer in Jesus.

Let’s Go Deeper in Our Walk with Jesus

From your description of a believer’s heart, what does a believer need to do to keep his or her heart pure and holy?

In 1 Peter 3:15, we read “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.”  (NIV)

How can we make certain that we set apart Christ as Lord in our hearts each day?

From Today’s Reading, a Disciple of Jesus Will …

As disciples of Jesus, we need to ask God to create a clean heart in us each day.  We need to gain the victory over sin.

List three things we can do in order to keep our hearts clean each day:

1.

2.

3.

Ministry, Mission, Outreach, Service Opportunities to Consider

Helping hands and hearts full of love are needed to assist in rebuilding the Gulf area.  Here is one mission to consider:

Hurricane Rita Recovery Teams – Mercy Ships

Hurricane Rita blew through southeast Texas a year ago September.  The hurricane caused major damage to many homes.  There is still a great deal of work to be done and teams of 2-30 are needed to work on the many projects.  Mercy Ships (one of New Life’s partner missions) is serving with Rita Recovery, the on-site organization managing the reconstruction efforts in the Beaumont, Texas area.  There are more than 800 uninsured/underinsured homes needing immediate attention.  The work consists of repairing roofs and walls.  Ken and Janet Winebark (New Life missionaries) invite anyone from New Life who would like to serve on a team, to contact them at 903-939-7111 or Janet at mercyteams@mercyships.org.

Being and Doing Like Jesus!

As our week of focusing on what it means to be and do what Jesus is and does comes to a close consider this: have you lived this week more like Jesus?  Have you carried out any thoughts, words or actions to which you can point and say, “That was more like Jesus?”  After all, the purpose of our study is not that we will have more information week after week, but that we will be more like Jesus and live more like Jesus week after week!  As we go about this day, let’s remember that only what we DO with what we have learned from God’s word impacts others, and demonstrates to them that God is real and true.  Words often ring hollow, but actions speak volumes. My our lives be a “bible” for others today that they may know Jesus, and know His word is true!
