My Prayer Today

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank You for the words of Your Son Jesus.  I know everything that Jesus said is filled with truth.  He alone is my salvation.  I ask that You would help me to gain a greater understanding of His teaching, because I want to know You in a deeper way.  I ask that You would give me a hunger for Your Word.  I pray that You would help me today to live in the "way" of truth that Jesus has provided.  I pray this all in His name, Amen.

God's Word Today

John 14:1-7

1 "Don't be troubled.  You trust God, now trust in me.  2 There are many rooms in my Father's home, and I am going to prepare a place for you.  If this were not so, I would tell you plainly.  3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.  4 And you know where I am going and how to get there."  5 "No, we don't, Lord," Thomas said.  "We haven't any idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?"  6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me.  7 If you had known who I am, then you would have known who my Father is.  From now on you know him and have seen him!"

Reflecting on God's Word

According to verse 5, what question does Thomas ask Jesus?

Why did Thomas want to know where Jesus was going?

Who did Jesus say was the "way" to God the Father?

A Deeper Exploration of God's Word

Read John 6:68.  How is Jesus the "way" for us to come before God in this verse?

Why are the words of Jesus so important?

How has Jesus secured a way for us through his teaching?

Understanding God's Purpose

According to verse 7, how would Thomas know the "way" to God the Father?

When we read the Bible, how are we learning the "way" to God?

Is the entire Bible truth?  How so?

Applying God's Word to Our Lives

How consistent are you in reading the Bible?

What is one commitment that you could make that would increase your knowledge and understanding of the Bible?

Thoughts

In this age where people are desperately longing to find stability and something to build their lives upon, there is no greater need today than the knowledge and understanding of truth.  In John 6:68 Peter says, "Lord, to whom would we go?  You alone have the words that give eternal life."  It is through the words of Jesus Christ that we can find the "way" to God himself.  The beauty of the word of God (the Bible) is that it offers to us the timeless truth about who God is, what He has done, and how we can live in a way that honor's Him in every situation we face.  It is the truth which gives us a hope and a foundation for living.

Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me."  One way Jesus has secured a way for our salvation is by his teaching.  Every time we read the Bible we are reading the way to God, because we are reading the words and teachings of Jesus.  When Jesus says "I am the way" he is saying that he is the only way of access before God.  As we continue to read the words of life that Jesus gives, we are learning the way that leads to salvation.  It is so important that we are constantly reading the Bible so that we may grow in our understanding of the "Way" (Jesus Christ).  Do not neglect the discipline of reading the Word of God because in it you will find all wisdom, hope, and comfort.
