Remembering God’s Passion

Heart of thorns and cross of nails

God’s heartfelt love for humanity culminating in Jesus’ death on the cross.

A scene from “Camelot” helps us understand God’s passion for His children.  In Camelot, it is against the king’s law to commit adultery – a crime punishable by death.  Arthur, the king, catches his beloved wife Guinevere in adultery with his most trusted knight Lancelot.  She is found guilty and is sentenced to die.  King Arthur loves his “Jenny” dearly in spite of her sin – but he made the law!  What a dilemma.  Mordred, an evil ambitious man, tempts Arthur by saying “Arthur!  What a magnificent dilemma!  Let her die, your life is over; let her live, your life’s a fraud.  Which will it be – kill the queen or kill the law?”  When the executioner asks Arthur for permission to kill Guinevere, Arthur breaks down – “I can’t!  I can’t let her die!”  Mordred taunts Arthur “Well, you’re human after all.  Human and helpless.”

Let’s replace the characters:  God is the King; the Queen is humanity; Mordred is Satan.  Imagine Satan saying with delight to God:  “God!  What a magnificent dilemma!  Let humanity die and Your passion, Your fellowship with them is gone forever.  Let them live and You are a fraud.  Which will it be?  Kill the world or kill the law?”  Without hesitation, Jesus steps down from His throne, takes off His royal robes and lays them aside and steps into the world to die in our place!  “I can’t let them die!”  Humble and strong – Jesus comes to our rescue.

“Though He was God, He did not demand and cling to His rights as God. He made Himself nothing; He took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. And in human form He obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal's death on a cross.”  Philippians 2:6-8

Hallelujah – what a Savior!
