“Romans is the chief book of
the New Testament.
It deserves to be known by heart
by every Christian."
Martin Luther
When the late Donald Barnhouse began his ministry at 10th Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, he stepped into the pulpit on his first Sunday morning and preached from the first verse of Romans, chapter one. He arrived the second Sunday and preached on the second verse of the same chapter (and did not quite finish that verse.) On the third Sunday, he picked up where he had left off in the second verse and moved on to the third verse. For the next 42 months, Barnhouse never preached on a text outside Romans! That’s 3 ½ years!
What makes the Book of Romans so powerful? For one thing, the apostle Paul (its author) covers every major doctrine of the Christian faith. We read about our sin and God’s judgment and learn about justification by faith and peace through reconciliation. (We’ll learn about those “50 cent” words also!). Paul also shares his understanding of our relationship with God and provides a reality check for our everyday lives. We learn about God’s plan for His children and our purpose in fulfilling His plan. And finally, Paul assures us of the width, height and depth of God’s love for us.
We may not take 3 ½ years to journey through this powerful book of the Bible – but, during 2006, we will cover the major themes as we grow together in the love and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
