The Proverbs of Solomon tell us a great deal about the results of pride. Given that King Solomon was the richest and wisest man who had ever lived during his lifetime, he must have known a great deal about the temptation of pride. In Proverbs 29:23 we read: 23A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor. We've seen the truth of this verse lived out over and over again in the "fall" of great men and women in every arena of life: politics, religion, entertainment, sports, etc... The challenge of success in any area of life is when it comes the recipient may think it was his or her efforts, or intelligence, or ingenuity that brought it. Any time we succeed in life and think the success originated with us instead of God, pride is going to bring us low. It's only a matter of time. The reality is ANY success in life originates with God. The Bible reminds us that even the ability to work is a gift from God, so it doesn't matter how good we are at anything, the ability to do it, the persistence to get it done, the conditions that make it a success are all blessings from God. When we recognize that our spirits will remain "lowly" or humble. We'll give God the credit and the end result will be honor. The honor may not come from people, but God will honor us and that's the best kind of honor of all! Take a moment and reflect on Proverbs 29:23. Who do you know from history or the current news who was brought low by pride? Think about your own life. Is pride a concern right now? Is there some success you're experiencing for which you haven't given God the proper credit? Take time right now to thank God for the blessings and successes of your life and to give the credit to Him! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You so much for all the gifts, skills and blessings you have given me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit right now that I may use them to extend Your glory in my sphere of influence today. God remove pride far from me that I may live in the humility of spirit that will bring Your honor. This I pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
