King Hezekiah was one of the few good kings in Judah's history, but as is the tendency with all kings, (and all human beings for that matter!) Hezekiah was prone to pride. Look at this incident from his life to see the consequences of pride: 24In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. He prayed to the LORD, who answered him and gave him a miraculous sign. 25But Hezekiah’s heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him; therefore the LORD’s wrath was on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26Then Hezekiah repented of the pride of his heart, as did the people of Jerusalem; therefore the LORD’s wrath did not come upon them during the days of Hezekiah. (2 Chronicles 32:24-26 NIV) The account starts with King Hezekiah getting ill, praying to God for healing and God providing him a miraculous healing. One would think that ought to have caused Hezekiah to humble himself and demonstrate gratitude to the Lord. Instead, the Scripture tells us "...Hezekiah's heart was proud and he did not respond to the kindness shown him." In our day, we'd call this entitlement. Hezekiah must have assumed he deserved God's healing because he was the king. In our day, many folks, who have received great natural skills from God, use them to their own glory and never give God an ounce of credit. That's entitlement, and it's source is pride. The consequence of Hezekiah's pride was God's wrath was on him AND on Judah and Jerusalem. Hezekiah's pride didn't just hurt him, it was no "victimless crime." His pride caused God's wrath to be poured out on the people of Judah as well. Pride rarely impacts only the one displaying it. Eventually, Hezekiah REPENTED, that is he turned away from, the pride of his heart, and his leadership in this area served as a model for all the people of Jerusalem. They repented, too. As a result God's wrath was turned away for a GENERATION. When we think our actions don't impact others, we need to remember Hezekiah, especially when it comes to pride. Pride leads to destruction, but repentance from pride leads to deliverance! |
