One of the most subtle aspects of greed, is we think it only happens to "rich" people, and we don't think we are rich. The Apostle Paul offered some comments on that to Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:17-19: 17Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. You say, "But Chris, it tells those who are "rich in this world" not to be proud and not to trust in their money (which would be a good definition of greed!), but I'm not rich." Whether you or I are rich is a matter of perspective, but as Americans, nearly all of us ARE rich by comparison to those in the rest of the world. As Americans, we generally see those who make $25,000-$50,000 a year more than we do as rich, unless of course we're making "serious" money, then it may take more money for us to consider ourselves rich. The reality is if we have a roof over our heads and a car to drive we are rich by the standards of the world. The point is---greed will surely attack us, tempt us to be dissatisfied with what we have, and push us to believe that if we just had "a little bit more" we'd be rich, or happy, or successful. When those thoughts come to mind remember that more money will NEVER make us happy or rich or successful, because money is a dissatisfier not a satisfier. That means if we don't have enough money to meet our basic needs, we'll be dissatisfied, but no amount of money will ever satisfy us. Did you notice what the Apostle Paul told Timothy WOULD bring satisfaction? Trusting God, doing good works, and being generous to those in need! The pattern is simple and consistent in God's word: Generosity is the antidote to greed. Let's go out and find someone who's in need today and meet their need. Then we will be truly rich! Let's pray. Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your word that leads us not only into truth, but into living meaningful lives when we apply what we learn. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may be rich in good works, and generous toward others, and thus experience Your life in our lives! This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
