The word "lust" actually occurs only a handful of times in the Bible. Depending on the English translation you read, the word occurs no more than seventeen times and as few as thirteen. Yet when it is used, the connotation is always extremely negative as in Exodus 34:15, which reads " 15“You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them" Exodus 34:15 NLT. The pagans who lived in the Promised Land "lusted" after their gods--their idols-which were no gods at all. That always happens in life when it comes to what we worship. Lust, when it doesn't refer to sexual desire, means a passionate or overmastering desire or craving. God created the human heart to worship Him. When we don't, we will worship something or someone. The passion of worship when distorted in the worship of false gods is lust. The devil always mimics God's good when tempting us to sin. The reason idolatry is often compared to prostitution in the Old Testament is we BELONG to God. Jesus and the Apostle Paul called that relationship between God and His people a marriage. We are the "bride" of Christ. That means when our affection for Him is turned to anyone or anything else instead of worship it degenerates into lust. Today, let's be absolutely certain to give our deepest passion--our worship--to Jesus. Otherwise, the result will be lust and idolatry. Take some time to reread Exodus 34:15. Get out your Bible and read it in its larger context. Read it in another translation to see how the word lust is translated. Then reflect on whom or what you are worshiping. If the focus of your worship is not Jesus, then repent and return to Him. If He is the focus, praise God and move forward in His love and power. Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You for being worthy of our worship and praise! Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may keep our hearts pure and focused solely on You. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
