Does Saturday seem to come about every four or five days to you, too? Wow! That week went fast! It's time to get ready for worship again. What a beautiful week we've had weather wise, but the overnight and into tomorrow morning looks iffy. Why do I point that out? Over the years, I've noticed the weather DOES impact worship participation. Of course the winter, severe weather impacts it, but when we move to spring and summer participation can be impacted by nice weather. I understand that to a degree. After all, when the weather's nice folks want to get out and enjoy it. But here's one I've heard over the years that makes no sense from a spiritual perspective, "It was so nice, I decided to go play golf (or mow the grass, or __________). After all, I enjoy God out in nature. I can worship Him on the golf course (or on a mountain) as well as at church." I won't deny that we may worship God ANYWHERE--and ought to do so. What I do deny is that golf courses were made for worship--or lawnmowers! The key is that as early as the FIRST Christian century folks were finding reasons not to worship together. We know that because the author of the Hebrews told us not to give up worshiping together as some have done. The point of this weekly reminder to prepare for worship is that while God deserves our worship EVERY day of our lives, corporate worship is a key aspect of our life together as Jesus' followers. If the weather determines whether we worship, we need to rethink our commitment to God and one another. As I've said the past couple of Sundays, if we're not going to be at New Life, then where will we worship God together with other believers. Summer and nice weather are not reasons (excuses) for giving up gathering together. They are simply times to figure out ways to make our priority of worshiping together a reality even if the weather and the season give us opportunity to enjoy God's creation more. So, how are you going to gather together tomorrow and celebrate all God's doing among us with brothers and sisters (and potential new brothers and sisters!) in the Lord? Let's pray: Heavenly Father, thanks for all You are and do! Fill us with the Holy Spirit so we may glorify You in our times alone and together! This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
