The Book of Numbers offers an extreme example of what happens when we aren't satisfied with God and put our stomachs before Him. The people of Israel were traveling in the wilderness after God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt. God provided food for them each day. The food appeared each morning, and the Israelites gathered it and ate it. They called it "manna," which means "what is it?" because they didn't know what it was. After a long time of eating manna, the Israelites started complaining. They let their stomachs do their "talking." They cried out to God and asked for meat. God responded. He provided quail. He didn't just provided a few quail. He provided so much quail the Israelites virtually swam in it. As they gorged themselves on it, God sent a plague, which killed many Israelites. Here's the summary of that event from Numbers 11:34 in the NLT: 34So that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah (which means “graves of gluttony”) because there they buried the people who had craved meat from Egypt. Graves of gluttony. Wow! That seems like both a terrible way to die, and a terrible memory to have in your collective conscious as a nation. Yet, how often do we crave some type of food the world offers MORE than we crave a relationship with God through Jesus? It's always easy to criticize the Israelites for turning against God when He gave them so many convincing proofs of His love for them, and His power in their lives. Yet, we often demonstrate the same rejection of God and lack of faith in our own. We have Jesus' life and ministry, death and resurrection to remind us of God's love and power. We have multitudes of blessings and yet we often crave something more. That's gluttony, the never being satisfied with what God provides and always wanting more. We may not have gorged ourselves on quail in the desert, but we gorge ourselves on television, or other forms of technology. We gorge ourselves on food and always want something more or better. Take a moment and reflect on this past week. Have you been grateful to God for all He provides? Have you relied on the Holy Spirit so you'll be satisfied in God and what He provides rather than desiring more, whatever more may mean? If so, praise God! If not, take some time to confess to God the times when you've desire the more the world offers instead of being satisfied with Him. Then repent, and ask God to fill you anew with the Holy Spirit. Let's pray: Thanks God for who You are, and for ALL You provide us. Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit that we may be satisfied with You and the blessings You provide us. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen. |
