The author of the Hebrews makes a distinction in kind between priests and THE priest--Jesus. Under the old deal, the priests offered sacrifices as the altar day after day, and offered the same sacrifices again and again as we read in Hebrews 10:11-14 NLT: 11Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. 12But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 13There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. 14For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy. Jesus is not like those priests. He offered not the blood of animals, but His own, innocent blood as a "single sacrifice for sins, good for all time." Think about that. No matter how many sins you or I commit, ONE sacrifice took care of them all--Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. The priests of pagan religions continue to offer sacrifices to this day. If there were a temple in Jerusalem, Jewish priests would be offering sacrifices day after day, but Jesus, the great High Priest, offered an all-sufficient sacrifice and because of that we never have to go to a priest to have him or her offer a sacrifice on our behalf! We're told that after Jesus offered that once and for all sacrifice He sat down at the place of honor at God's right hand, and He is there at this moment waiting until all His enemies are humbled. Verse 14 reiterates the amazing reality of Jesus' sacrifice: For by that one offering He forever made perfect those who are being made holy. I love the way the NLT translates what Jesus did. His one offering made us perfect, that is when God looks at us He sees perfection, not because we are perfect, but because the blood of Jesus perfects us. Then we read that we are being made holy. The traditional word for that is sanctification. We are being made like Jesus. We aren't becoming gods, but we are becoming more and more like Jesus in our character and lives. That's amazing news. I'm so aware of how far short I fall of the glory of God, and yet because of what Jesus did on the cross, and because of His Spirit living in me, day by day, I am being made holy. I am becoming more and more like Him, and so are you, as you yield control of your life to Jesus and His Holy Spirit! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to make us perfect and to make us holy! Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we may live out that perfection and holiness in every area of our lives today, to Your glory and honor. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
