Jesus came to heal us in every dimension of life. His mission came directly from Isaiah 61 as Luke reminded us: 16When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: 18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, 19and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come.” 20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!” Luke 4:16-21 NLT The Spirit of the Lord was on Jesus in a way no one before or since has ever known, because He IS God. His healing penetrates the human heart, soul, mind, body and spirit. The freedom He came to give is freedom from sin and death as well as whatever other prisons we find ourselves in during our lives. The sight He gives is not only to the physically blind, but the spiritually blind as well. Some would say, "He doesn't always heal," and they are right if they mean He doesn't always give us that for which we pray. But Jesus does ALWAYS heal those who ask Him with sincere hearts. Whatever pain you're experiencing right now, Jesus knows the pain, and is there to bring healing. Sometimes our pride keeps us from turning to Jesus for healing. Sometimes our lack of faith prevents the healing from coming, and sometimes the healing Jesus wants us to have differs greatly from what we desire. I remember a time about seven years ago when I had such a severe headache I thought I was having a stroke. Three of my four grandparents and my mother died of strokes, so when the excruciating pain came, I thought the worst. Nancy drove me to the emergency room, and after immediate and thorough tests the doctors told me it was a severe migraine and prescribed medicine for it. I knew it wasn't a migraine, as I'd experienced migraines throughout my childhood. Thankfully, they ended when I entered adolescence. I left the hospital with migraine medicine and a dull headache. The next day the pain returned as severe as before. My prayers during that time went from, "Lord, heal me," to "Lord, ease the pain," to "Lord, just let the pain ease up for five minutes," to "Lord, take me to be with you." That's how bad the pain was. After another day of pain, a friend suggested I go to her chiropractor. I've been to chiropractors all my life, so I wasn't opposed to the idea, in fact I'd been to a chiropractor just a few days earlier, so I didn't think it would make a difference, but I was in so much pain I went. The chiropractor felt my neck and said, "I think I know what's wrong, but I need to take an x-ray. Thinking it was a way of getting more money from my visit, I asked, "How much will that cost?" He said, "Whatever your insurance pays. If they don't cover it, we'll take care of it." So, I had the x-ray. He told me I had a misalignment of my C-2 vertebra. I know enough about anatomy to know that the C-2 is high up in your neck and damage there can leave you paralyzed or dead. He wanted to adjust it. I was in so much pain, I let him. In an instant 90% of the pain was gone. Within a couple of days I was back to normal. So, How did Jesus answer my prayer? By providing a chiropractor? By ignoring me and letting my healing up to me? Here's my answer: Yes, Jesus DID provide a chiropractor. The advances in medicine, traditional and otherwise, are the direct result of God creating us in His image and giving us wisdom. Jesus also gave me grace to deal with the pain, and at one point when the pain was worst and I told Him to take me, He gave me peace IN the pain, an experience I can't really describe except that even though I base all physical pain in my life relative to that day's excruciating pain, it was a good experience, because I KNEW He was with me, and whatever happened it would be okay. I don't know what pain you are experiencing right now--physical, emotional, spiritual. I do know Jesus is THE Healer, and if we have trusted Him as Savior and Lord, He IS with us no matter what pain we're experiencing. I wish I could write that He will always take away all our pain. That hasn't been my experience. I can write that He always sustains us whether through the pain or by taking it away. I pray that in all of our pain, we will turn to the one true Healer of our lives--Jesus Christ for the healing only He can provide. Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to heal us in body, soul and spirit! Thank You for caring about our pain, and providing us healing. Fill us with the Holy Spirit so we may always know Your presence and experience Your healing power. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen |
