We've all heard the adage, "Repetition is the mother of learning," Deuteronomy 6:7 demonstrates that God believes it: 7Repeat them[God's Commands] again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Notice the four "venues" for repeating the commands to our children: 1) at home; 2) on the road; 3) when we're going to bed; and 4) when we get up. That means we are to be teaching God's commands to our children over and over and over again. As we repeat the commands---and LIVE them out in our daily lives, our children come to understand them not just mentally, but practically. Have you ever had someone tell you, "Do as I say, not as I do."? That is absolutely the opposite of God's intention for us. We aren't supposed to repeat His commands over and over to our children, while living the opposite of the commands we're teaching. We're to practice what we preach. To the degree our teaching of the commands and our living them out in daily life coincides is the degree to which our children will see them as credible. Why learn an idea that isn't live out in daily life? It's a valid question, and one that children ask consciously or unconsciously every day. Take a moment to consider how closely your words and actions coincide when it comes to teaching the commands of God to others. If the correlation is close--praise God! That only happens when the Holy Spirit is leading in our lives. If it isn't close--pray to God and ask for His empowering Spirit to transform your actions to coincide with the commands. Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thanks for always being there in our lives! Thanks for guiding us by Your Holy Spirit. Empower us to be faithful in living out Your commands so our teaching of them to our children will be credible and powerful. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. |
