The second of the titles given to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6-7 is Mighty God. While we may look at the phrase and say, "Of course, Jesus is 'Mighty God,'" the concept is actually quite incredible. That a human being could be "Mighty God" is one that many have rejected down through the centuries. After all, how could a being be both God AND human? That's the question that separates Christianity from every, other world religion. The Jews rejected the idea that Jesus could be the Messiah, the Mighty God predicted in Isaiah, because (among other things) He was crucified, and they believed that everyone who died on a tree was cursed. Actually, that's precisely the point of Jesus' crucifixion--He was cursed for our sins. He bore our sins in His body on the cross that we may be dead to sin and alive to all that is good. But the crucial point to consider is whether Jesus fits the "description" of being both God and man. He was definitely a man, because He was born, he lived and died. During His life, He ate, drank, slept, cried, and did the things that human beings do. So, how would we know that He was God? He performed miracles. He cast out demons, showing mastery over the spiritual realm. He walked on water, showing mastery over the physical realm. He rose from the dead, showing mastery over death! He spoke with a wisdom and authority that exceeded any human being. Jesus demonstrated that He was (and IS) God. What about MIGHTY God? Was Jesus MIGHTY during His life on earth? Yes, in the spiritual sense. No, in the political sense. As we've already discussed, when Jesus returns we will see His might and power displayed in EVERY arena of life. We will have no doubt that Jesus is Mighty God, when He returns. Take some time today to consider the evidence Jesus' first coming offered us that He is God, and then to ponder the power and might He will display when He returns. Give thanks for the opportunity to know Him as Savior and Lord, AND as Mighty God! Let's pray: Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to deliver us from sin and death, to be Mighty God in our lives! Fill us with the Holy Spirit that we may live in His power, and show others His great salvation. This we pray in His powerful name! Amen. |
