One of the more challenging verses in the New Testament for 21st century American believers is Romans 5:3:  ³We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 

We're more for the Jesus who will fix every problem and trial, than let's REJOICE when we face problems and trials because they'll help us develop endurance.  The Christian life has NEVER been easy, but much modern preaching focuses on the blessings and benefits of following Jesus without the challenges.  Back in the World War II era, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote the book The Cost of Discipleship.  In it he wrote, "Grace is free, but it isn't cheap."  Not cheap, indeed.  It cost Jesus EVERYTHING!  Jesus told us if the world hated Him, why should we be surprised when the world hates us?  He also told us to beware when all speak well of us, because that's the way people spoke of the false prophets before us.

Not that we're looking for people to speak disparagingly of us.  It's just that the road to following Jesus doesn't have shortcuts.  When we follow Jesus we'll suffer at times, maybe much of the time.  The suffering may not be physical, but spiritual warfare will surely come, since the devil doesn't want us to follow Jesus.  Think about your life right now.  Is it easy or hard?  If it's easy, is it because you're following the path of least resistance, or are you simply in a time of blessing right now?  If it's hard, is it because you're not following Jesus or because you ARE?  Take some time to reflect and pray and if you realize you're suffering trials and problems because of your faith in Jesus, do something really uncommon, but quite biblical--REJOICE!

Heavenly Father, Thank You for considering us worthy of suffering for You.  Fill us with Your Holy Spirit that we may rejoice in suffering when it's for You and the advancement of Your Kingdom.  This we pray in Jesus' name.  Amen.
